It teaches you to observe the person in front of you, understand their inner experience, and recognize what is actually happening in the therapeutic process. Above all, it should teach you to distinguish between applying a technique and doing genuine therapeutic work.

Knowing the procedures is important. But what do you do when a client responds differently from what the instructions describe? When they say they feel better, but discussing the original problem brings back the same distress? When they want to change, yet something about that change frightens them?

At that point, knowing which sentence to say next is not enough. You need understanding, experience, and the ability to stay present with the person in front of you.

That is why, when choosing a training program, I consider one question more important than “How many techniques will I learn?” That question is: “What kind of hypnotherapist will this school help me become?”

Techniques Are Training Wheels, Not the Ultimate Goal

I often tell students at the Academy of Hypnotherapy that techniques are like training wheels. Initially, they provide support, help us understand the sequence, and allow us to focus on individual skills. Their purpose, however, is not to make us depend on them forever.

An athlete does push-ups, runs, stretches, and practices individual elements of the game during training. During a match, they do not repeat their training exercises in the same order. They use the abilities they have developed and respond to what is happening.

Learning hypnotherapy is similar. Through exercises, we develop listening, observation, presence, the use of language, and the ability to follow someone’s inner experience. When working with a client, we bring these skills together according to what is actually happening.

My goal is not for students to finish their training and repeat the same learned procedure with every client. I want them to understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and when it makes sense to change direction.

The goal is not to memorize as many procedures as possible. The goal is to recognize the underlying principle and know how to apply it in a real situation.

When you understand the principle, you can formulate your own sentences, adapt to the client, and gradually develop your own style. A technique becomes a tool, rather than something you have to make the person fit.

A Good Hypnosis School Teaches You to Observe, Not Just Speak

When we think about hypnosis, we quickly think about words: what to say, how to formulate a suggestion, and which expression to use. In my teaching, however, I place considerable emphasis on what happens before the therapist speaks.

What do you notice about the person in front of you? What do they tell you about their experience? Are you genuinely following them, or mainly following your own idea of how the session should unfold?

A good example is an approach we call the unconscious set. Here, we begin with something already present in the client’s experience: blinking, a change in breathing, bodily stillness, an inner image, or a feeling. First, we notice and explore it. Then, through suggestion, we connect it with the possibility of trance or inner learning.

We do not need a predetermined scene. The person in front of us is our starting point.

I also teach students an important distinction: noticing a change does not mean knowing what that change means. If a client’s breathing changes, we do not automatically assume that we understand their internal state. We ask and explore it together.

An exercise like this is therefore not just about learning an induction. It also develops a way of working in which the therapist learns to follow the client’s experience rather than imposing an interpretation.

Suggestion Gives What Is Happening Meaning and Direction

Suggestion plays a central role in our approach. We connect something the client notices or experiences with the possibility of further exploration, learning, or change.

If the client is already aware of a particular feeling, we can invite them to explore it with curiosity. If they notice their body becoming still, we can connect this with the possibility of turning their attention inward. If an inner image emerges, the therapist does not have to explain its meaning. Instead, they can help the client discover what that image means to them.

The key is to understand what we are doing through suggestion. It is not simply a matter of saying sentences that sound hypnotic. The question is where we are directing attention and what kind of space we are opening for the client’s experience.

That is why, by my standards, a good hypnosis school does not teach only prepared suggestions. It also teaches students to understand their purpose, tailor their language to the individual, and observe the person’s response.

Understanding the Unconscious Mind Goes Beyond Knowing Techniques

If a training program devotes most of its time to procedures and very little to exploring inner motivations, conflicts, and patterns of avoidance, I believe it leaves out an essential part of a hypnotherapist’s preparation.

In my work, I do not ask only what the client wants to be free of. I am also interested in what a particular way of responding means to them. What would it mean for them to genuinely change? What would they have to move closer to? What would they need to do differently in their life?

Imagine someone who wants to become more assertive but also associates assertiveness with the risk of losing other people’s approval. Simply supporting their desire for change with a statement that they will now be confident is not enough. It makes sense to explore their fear of the consequences of that change as well.

These are precisely the kinds of inner dynamics I want students to understand. Not just the content of a client’s thoughts, but also the relationship between their desires, fears, needs, and sense of who they are.

In this work, I also draw on the deeper, contemplative teachings of the Enneagram. I approach it as a map for exploring motivations and defensive patterns, not as a diagnosis or a way to confine someone to a personality category. We are interested in what the person is trying to preserve, what they are avoiding, and what they find difficult to allow themselves.

No map, however, should replace the person in front of us. Its value lies in the questions it helps us open up, not in providing ready-made answers.

A Hypnotherapist Must Also Explore Themselves

My teaching rests on a fundamental conviction: we can genuinely accompany a client only as deeply as we are willing to meet ourselves—and have experienced that encounter ourselves.

We can read a great deal about fear. We can know many techniques for working with it. But to me, something is different when we have also encountered our own fear and noticed the many ways we try to escape it.

The same applies to sadness, shame, helplessness, or a sense of emptiness. During training, I am interested in what happens within the future therapist when a client encounters such an experience. Can they remain present? Do they feel a need to stop the uncomfortable experience as quickly as possible? Do they want to help the client, or primarily to reduce their own discomfort in being with them?

When I say that a therapist must go all the way in exploring themselves, I do not mean that they must have a perfect life. I mean being honest in their own exploration: not always stopping at the first explanation, reassurance, or pleasant feeling, but being willing to encounter what they would rather avoid.

At the same time, personal experience does not replace professional knowledge. Having explored oneself extensively is not enough if one cannot listen to another person, understand the therapeutic process, and recognize the limits of one’s competence.

In good training, professional and personal development must go hand in hand.

Feeling Good at the End of a Session Is Not the Whole Answer

One of the most important things I want to teach a future hypnotherapist is not to be satisfied with their own impression that a session went well.

The client says they feel better. The therapist is pleased. Both would like the work to be complete. But at that point, another question matters to me: what happens when the client returns their attention to the issue that brought them to therapy?

Imagine that someone feels calm after working on their fear of public speaking. But when they picture themselves standing in front of an audience, they say: “It’s much better now. It’s just that I still mustn’t make a mistake.”

That is precisely the sentence I would want to pay attention to. Not because a therapist should look for additional problems everywhere, but because the client has revealed something that still matters to them.

Perhaps a knot remains that we have not yet untied. If what maintains the problem remains untouched, the problem may reappear after the session.

This does not necessarily involve deliberate deception. In my approach, I also consider the possibility that the client wants relief but still finds it difficult to move closer to something uncomfortable. What we need, therefore, is not distrust of their words, but careful exploration together, with respect for their experience.

A Good Hypnosis School Teaches You to Assess Change and Respect Boundaries

I therefore teach students to explore, together with the client, what has changed. How do they experience the original situation now? What is different? What remains? How will they recognize the change in everyday life?

The purpose of this assessment is not to prove the therapist’s success. It is to gain a clearer picture of the client’s experience and what still needs attention.

At the same time, untying the knot does not mean extending every session until every uncomfortable feeling disappears. To me, “going all the way” does not mean forcing the process. It is important to respect the client’s pace, the agreed goals, and the boundaries of the therapeutic work.

I also expect future hypnotherapists to learn to recognize when they need supervision, further knowledge, or collaboration with another professional. Independence is not the belief that we can do everything ourselves. It also includes the ability to assess responsibly what we do not yet know.

A Hypnosis School Should Help You Develop Your Own Way of Working

At the Academy of Hypnotherapy, my aim is to connect the learning of techniques with an understanding of principles, self-exploration, and the development of independent therapeutic thinking. The two-year program includes lectures, practical exercises, clinical demonstrations, supervision, and mentoring.

I do not want students to become copies of me. I want them to understand what they are doing, discover their own way of working, and know how to adapt it to the person in front of them.

When choosing a hypnosis school, therefore, do not look only at the list of techniques. Ask how you will develop your understanding of the client, how you will receive feedback, and how much space will be devoted to your own exploration.

A good hypnosis school does not just teach you what to do.
