They discovered when the problem began, why it repeats, and how it affects their lives. Yet when the next trigger appears, the body responds again with anxiety, panic, withdrawal, anger, or helplessness.
That does not mean their previous work was wasted. Understanding matters and is often the first step.
But understanding a problem and experiencing change are not the same thing.

Psychotherapy is not a single method
Psychotherapy is a broad term covering many approaches. Some focus primarily on thoughts and behaviour, while others work with relationships, emotions, bodily experience, past events, or unconscious processes. It would therefore be inaccurate to suggest that all psychotherapy operates only at the level of conscious insight.
The difference is mainly in how the work is approached.

Clinical hypnotherapy deliberately uses hypnosis—a state of focused attention and reduced awareness of peripheral stimuli in which a person may experience inner processes differently and respond more readily to therapeutic suggestions. Hypnosis is not sleep, unconsciousness, or surrendering control.
Psychotherapy and hypnotherapy are therefore not necessarily opposites. Hypnosis can also be integrated into a broader psychotherapeutic process.
When the conscious mind knows, but the body still responds in the old way
The conscious mind may understand:
that the danger has passed,
that a particular person is not a threat,
that we are worthy of love,
that a panic attack is not the same as actual danger,
that a past event is no longer happening now.
Yet the automatic response may remain unchanged.
The heart accelerates. The body becomes tense. Breathing becomes shallow. Fear, withdrawal, or a sense of losing control appears.
A substantial part of emotional, bodily, and behavioural processing occurs outside immediate conscious control. Research shows that some emotional responses can begin before a person becomes fully aware of the triggering stimulus.
Popular explanations sometimes describe the conscious mind as 10 percent and the unconscious mind as 90 percent of our functioning. This is not a scientifically measured ratio. It is better understood as a metaphor for an important truth:
Much of what we feel and do begins before we have time to think about it consciously.
For lasting change, it may not be enough to know how we should feel or behave. Change may also need to reach learned emotional associations, bodily responses, implicit memories, and automatic patterns.

How can hypnotherapy help?
Nothing is forced in hypnosis.
The client is not passive, and the therapist does not take control of the client’s mind. Through voice, questions, metaphors, and directed attention, the therapist gently guides the client into deeper contact with their own experience.
Within that space, a person may discover:
a new perspective on an old event,
contact with a long-suppressed feeling,
a bodily signal that had previously gone unnoticed,
a forgotten inner resource,
a new possible response,
an answer that emerges from direct experience rather than analysis.
Clients often already carry important abilities, values, memories, and natural intelligence needed for change. Old automatic patterns may simply make those resources difficult to access.
The therapist’s role is therefore not to dictate who the client should become.
In my approach, a therapist does not impose ready-made answers or live the client’s life for them. Professional explanation, safety guidance, or direction may sometimes be appropriate, but meaningful change occurs when clients experience a new inner possibility for themselves.
The answer is not always found through more thinking. Sometimes it is discovered through deeper contact with one’s own experience.

What concerns commonly bring people to hypnotherapy?
People often explore hypnotherapy in connection with:
anxiety and persistent inner tension,
panic attacks and phobias,
the effects of traumatic experiences,
low self-esteem and limiting beliefs,
insomnia and stress,
burnout,
depressive mood or a loss of meaning,
psychosomatic symptoms,
unwanted habits and automatic reactions.
Research on hypnosis is promising in some areas, including pain management, irritable bowel syndrome, and anxiety related to medical procedures. For other conditions, the evidence remains limited or mixed.
Hypnotherapy must not replace appropriate medical or psychiatric care in cases involving major depression, complex trauma, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, or severe psychiatric symptoms. It may form part of a broader treatment plan when delivered by an appropriately trained professional.

Why does a hypnotherapist’s competence matter?
Hypnosis is a tool. Its safety and value depend significantly on the person using it.
A competent hypnotherapist should be able to:
assess whether hypnosis is appropriate for the individual,
recognise when other or additional care is required,
establish a safe therapeutic relationship,
avoid imposing interpretations,
respect the client’s boundaries, autonomy, and pace,
recognise when referral to another professional is necessary.
The American Psychiatric Association states that hypnosis should be used by appropriately licensed and trained health professionals within their area of expertise and in the context of suitable medical and psychiatric assessment. Training should include both theoretical education and supervised clinical experience.
For this reason, the Hypnotherapy Academy provides a two-year professional programme in clinical hypnotherapy combining theory, practical exercises, clinical demonstrations, supervision, mentorship, and the personal maturity of the future therapist.
We can guide others only as deeply as we have come to know ourselves.

Which is better: psychotherapy or hypnotherapy?
There is no universal answer.
Psychotherapy may be the best choice for one person, while hypnotherapy may be appropriate for another. In many cases, the two can complement each other.
The more useful question is:
Has the person only understood the problem, or has the underlying inner response also changed?
When you understand everything but still react in the same way at the crucial moment, it may be helpful to explore not only conscious insight but also the deeper processes maintaining that response.
You can learn more about my approach on the clinical hypnotherapy page.
Frequently asked questions

Is hypnotherapy a form of psychotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses hypnosis.
